Chapter ace

San Diego Eagles hit the courts Saturday morning for the chapter’s first tennis outing. Up to 20 chapter members and friends gathered at the Barnes Tennis Center on Point Loma for light instruction and then some free play.

Took a hike

BC San Diego alumni gathered yesterday in El Cajon to take a hike through a portion of the Crestridge Ecological Reserve. The group walked a loop of about 1.6 miles in generally easy terrain with some great vistas.

L-R: Troy Johnson ’14, Lori Mahler P’11, Joe Mahler ’74 P’11, Tsu daughter, Lissa Tsu ’00, Brian Tsu ’00, Clark son (rear), Yilun Zhang ’21, Bill McDonald ’68, Catherine Larrabee Hamilton ’16, and Seth David Clark ’15.

We asked another hiker to take a photo of the group. After he did so, he told us he was a graduate of Boston University. Small world!

One interesting and atypical feature of this particular hiking route is a “storybook” section, where about 20 stations present brief sections of children’s stories. Kids can enjoy not only the stories, but locating the stations in order, which is rather easy to do. During our hike, the stories were by Dr. Seuss, who has a San Diego connection. Dr. Seuss’ real name was Theodore Geisel, and the iconic library at UC San Diego is named after him.

Eagles and birdies

L-R: Justin Niles ’09, Lissa Tsu ’00, Brian Tsu ’00, Joseph Mahler ’74 P’11, Tom Campbell, Megan Schofield, Dennis Monahan ’82, Yilun Zhang ’21, Carole Monahan, John Stevens ’51, Alyssa Ivancevich ’19, Bryan Boulton (rear), Bill McDonald ’68 (middle), Carter Zilaro (front), Ray Berube ’78 P’13’17, Patrick Zilaro ’96, Brian Caddigan ’96, Angela Marie Vieira ’82, Zeynep Barakat ’99, and Fred Hanover P’25.

San Diego Eagles went out to score some birdies on Saturday, February 1, at The Links at Lakehouse in San Marcos. (Sorry for my tardiness in posting this.) There were few birdies, but higher scores aplenty and much enjoyment at spending the morning on a golf course in February.

The outing was arranged and overseen by Fred Hanover, a BC parent and coach of the UC San Diego varsity men’s golf team, who managed the same event in 2024. Before the BC group ventured out on the executive course (9 holes, all par 3), Fred coached at the driving range, offering pointers and encouraging words.

This group of Eagles was notable for an unusual range of graduation dates. Joining us for the first time, but we all hope not the last time, was John Stevens, MD, Class of 1951. Not a typo. 1951, nearly 74 years ago. Jack, 94 years old, is a retired Navy Captain and flight surgeon who says he golfs “about twice a week.” He acquitted himself very well on the course and said at lunch he hopes to go to his 75th class reunion (!) next year.

At the other end of the class range was Yilun Zhang, Class of 1921, a spread of 70 years.

Also notable was an atypical “beat the pro.” Fred Hanover, coach and professional golfer, gave participants the opportunity to “beat the pro” on one of the holes, i.e., to make a shot closer to the pin than his. This time, Megan Schofield, not a veteran golfer, did just that. Her reward — all of the group knowing of her achievement.

The group closed the round with lunch.
