For the 22d time, the Eagles and Terriers will meet for the Beanpot Championship, Monday, February 8, 4:30 pm PT. Join San Diego Eagles for a game watch at The Beer Co., 602 Broadway, San Diego.

BC, #1 in Hockey East and ranked #4 nationally, reached this year’s final with a 3-2 win yesterday over #7 Harvard. The Eagles fell behind 2-1 in the first period, but scored 2 power play goals in the second for the win.

The victory put BC in the finals for the 35th time in 64 Beanpots. And it was win number 1,001 for Coach Jerry York.

Since 1993, either Boston College or BU has won the Beanpot crown. BC took 9 of those titles, including 5 straight, 2010-14. BU is ranked #9 nationally this year.

The #1 BC women’s hockey team is also in the Beanpot final, which will be played Tuesday, February 9. The Eagles beat Harvard in today’s opening round, 8-0. Harvard had been BC’s nemesis last season, beating the Eagles in the Beanpot final and in the Frozen Four. Sweet revenge. BC will play the winner of BU-Northeastern.

Countdown to JY1K is over!

Jerry York '67

Jerry York ’67

Update: BC definitively ended the quest for Jerry York’s 1,000th victory as a coach, beating UMass 8-0 January 22.

York’s record was at 997 wins for some time late in 2015, as BC suffered a swoon of three successive one-goal losses, to Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Providence. A two-game series of Providence this past weekend produced a win and tie, so the needle moved at least a little to 998.

Of York’s career wins, 531 have come as coach at BC. He had previous successful stints at Clarkson and Bowling Green, where he won his first NCAA championship in 1984, before returning to his alma mater in 1994. York was captain and an all-America at BC, graduating in 1967.

This is a 2013 BC video that honors York for becoming college hockey’s winningest coach in December 2012.

Women’s hockey #1

WHockey

The BC women’s hockey team, undefeated in its first 20 games, is ranked #1 in the country. The Eagles had been stuck at #2 for many weeks, behind either Minnesota or Wisconsin, but both of them have suffered defeats and BC has taken the lead.

Men’s hockey, also previously #2 in the land, took the opposite direction. After a 4-3 loss to Notre Dame, the Eagles (13-2-1) (6-1-1) fell to #4.

Both hockey teams are on a semester/holiday break. The men play in the Florida College Classic in Estero, Fla., December 28-9, opening against Ohio State. The following night they play either Cornell or #1 Providence. BC opens 2016 with two two-game series against Providence January 8-9 and then BU January 15-16. The women don’t play until January 9, when they start 2016 against BU.
