For the first time in a decade, BU beat BC’s men’s hockey team in the Beanpot. Last night, the Terriers scored first and held the Eagles in check in the opening and closing periods, winning 3-1. BC had only 2 shots on goal in the first period, and 5 in the third. The Eagles’ 16 shots in the second period resulted in only one goal.

BC will play Northeastern next Monday in the Beanpot consolation.

The Eagles had beaten the Terriers a record six times in a row in the Beanpot before yesterday, including 3 times in the final and 1-0 in overtime last season. This year, BU has swept the series, beating BC in each of their 3 meetings. The Eagles have scored a total of only 2 goals in those 3 games.

sadBUBC fans may remember that the Eagles can come back from a losing record against the Terriers. In 2006, BU had beaten BC 4 out of 5 times, including for the Beanpot and Hockey East championships. Meeting in the NCAA Regional tournament in Worcester, the Eagles romped over BU, 5-0. The game produced one of my favorite pictures of BU fans, at left.

The Eagles remain #1 in Hockey East, 3 points ahead of BU. They have 6 games remaining, including the Beanpot consolation, before the Hockey East tournament begins March 3.

The BC women’s hockey team, ranked #6 in the country, plays Northeastern tonight in the women’s Beanpot Championship game. The Eagles had defeated BU in the opening round.

In a game postponed one day because of a snow storm, BC men’s hockey team defeated Providence, 3-1, today in the second game of a “Frozen Fenway” doubleheader. A sparse crowd braved what felt like single-digit temperatures to watch the Eagles come back from a goal down to win. BU defeated UMass in the opener.

The day delay helped BC in that goalie Joe Woll and forward Colin White had another day of acclimation after they helped the US win the World Junior Hockey Championship in Toronto Thursday (item below).

mattryanMatt Ryan ’08 was named quarterback on this year’s Associated Press all-NFL team. He edged out Tom Brady of the New England Patriots to be all-NFL quarterback for the first time in his nine-year NFL career.

Many suggest Ryan may also overtake Brady in the contest for the NFL’s most valuable player this season, to be announced February 4, the day before the Super Bowl.

Eagles help USA win World Juniors
BC hockey forward Colin White scored the tying goal in the World Junior Hockey Championship game against Canada Thursday. White’s goal made the score 4-4, which was the score at the end of regulation. USA won the game and championship in the shoot-out.

BC goalie Joe Woll did not play in the championship, but was the USA goalie in its 3-1 victory over Canada in the preliminary round, December 31. He stopped 25 Canada shots.

White led USA with 7 goals in the tournament, tying for second in total points.

Both the BC men’s and women’s basketball teams started the new year off great, winning their opening games in ACC play. And both in convincing fashion.

The men’s team took extra pleasure in the 96-81 victory over Syracuse on New Year’s Day, as the win ended a 19-game conference losing streak. Freshman guard Ky Bowman scored 30 points to lead the Eagles in the dominating win. BC was never behind in the game.

The Eagles play at Wake Forest today. UPDATE: Eagles lose to Wake Forest, 79-66.

BC’s women’s team beat Clemson, 60-48, on January 2. Sophomore Mariella Fasoula had a double-double, 19 points, 11 rebounds, in the win.

The BC hockey teams resume play this week following a holiday break. Meanwhile, some Eagles are in Toronto as members of the US Team participating in the World Junior Championships. In the US’s 3-1 victory over Canada December 31, goalie Joe Woll made 25 saves and Colin White scored the opening goal.
