BC #1 college in hockey

Beanpot game watch changed to Tuesday, Feb. 3, 5 pm, Beer Co. The opening round was postponed a day because of the snowstorm.

USA Today has published a list of the best US college men’s hockey programs, based on “athletic strength, leadership, career preparation and value.” At the top of the list is none other than, ahem, Boston College. I think BC fans would have only been surprised if some other school was there.

The top 10 college men’s hockey programs are

  • Boston College
  • Wisconsin
  • Minnesota
  • Notre Dame
  • Quinnipiac
  • Denver
  • Michigan
  • Colgate
  • Providence
  • Union

Notice the absence of that other hockey program on Commonwealth Avenue.

Today’s San Diego Union-Tribune leads off its sports section with a feature on Thatcher Demko, San Diego kid and sophomore goalie for the #6 Eagles.

BC men’s hockey beat UMass Saturday to improve to 3-1. The #3 women’s ice hockey team improved to 5-0-1 with a two-game sweep of #5 Cornell. Check out the Sports Schedules/Results page for just what it says, schedules and results for Eagles teams.

Congratulations, Johnny Hockey! — Goodbye, Johnny Hockey :(

JG_HobeyJohnny Gaudreau, known to many fans as “Johnny Hockey,” has won the 2014 Hobey Baker Award, presented today to the best male college hockey player. A junior, he is the third Eagle to win college hockey’s top award. David Emma was the first Eagle to win the award, in 1991, and Mike Mottau won it in 2000.

Gaudreau, it was also announced today, has signed with the Calgary Flames of the National Hockey League, and will begin NHL play Sunday. He will join teammate and line mate Bill Arnold, who also signed with the Flames.
