BC reception Del Mar

The University sponsored a reception for local alumni on February 12 at the home of Patricia and Marc Brutten P’16, P’18, members of the BC Board of Regents. Special guest was James Husson, senior vice president for University advancement (who took the photo).

Below is a picture from the event, obtained recently.

‘Fly like an Eagle’

Actually, San Diego Eagles were slightly grounded Saturday by a SoCal “winter storm,” i.e., light occasional rain, when local alumni veterans and guests toured the Flying Leathernecks Aviation Museum adjacent to MCAS Miramar.

Lou Scanlon ’67 talks about the F-4 Phantom

Brigadier General Michael Aguilar, USMC (Retired), vice chairman of the board at the museum, greeted the BC San Diego group and provided information about the background of the museum and the foundation that supports it, as well as the exhibits inside. He then led the convocation through the static displays of more than 40 aircraft — both helicopters and planes — flown by Marines through the decades, as well as a couple examples of opponent aircraft.

Our own Commander Lou Scanlon, USN (Retired), ’67, provided a personal introduction to the F-4, the aircraft he flew in the Vietnam War.

Following the museum tour, two dozen or so gathered in a private area at Ballast Point Miramar for lunch, refreshments, networking, and a presentation by Colonel Dan Arkins, USA (Retired), ’81, co-chairman of BC’s Veteran Alumni Network. Also in attendance was Jean Chisser, MA’91, BC associate director, Alumni Special Services, and liaison with the BC Veteran Alumni Network.

We were happy to see a wide range of ages present, as well as alumni from Orange County. The Chapter will look to develop, with alumni veterans and those serving on active duty in this area, activities, events, and services of interest. We welcome ideas from veterans, active service members, and those who are neither.

San Diego Eagles gathered for a day at the races Saturday. It was the penultimate day of the fall or Bing Crosby (or, to us, BC) season at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, “where the turf meets the surf.”

View from our Turf Club Seats

The chapter was able to fill five tables in the track’s Turf Club, which offers an excellent view of the track and finish line, as well as food and other refreshments. Even with the view, each table had a monitor, which enabled all to watch what was right in front of us. :)

There was no tally of wins and losses, but many in attendance expressed their enjoyment of the afternoon.

Racing season doesn’t come again until mid-July, with the next BC Season beginning in early November. We’ll look at have another event in one or both of the seasons next year.
