Eagles sweep Beanpot — Men, women victorious

The BC men’s and women’s ice hockey teams both won this year’s Beanpot. The #1 men’s team beat Northeastern, 4-1, and the #7 women’s team also beat Northeastern, 3-0. It was the fifth consecutive Beanpot championship for the men and the fifth overall for the women, all those coming in the last nine years.

Men: BC 4, Northeastern 1
With his rear end on the ice, BC captain Patrick Brown tipped a shot/pass past the Northeastern goalie with 5:30 remaining in the Beanpot championship game Monday, Feb. 10, to give BC a 2-1 lead. The goal ended up the game-winner as the Eagles also scored into an empty net and on a breakaway in the last 1:16 to end the game 4-1 victors.

The #1 Eagles won their fifth consecutive Beanpot championship. They outshot the Huskies 41-30. Freshman goalie Thatcher Demko, from San Diego, won the Eberly Award as the goalie with the best save percentage, .966, second-highest in the history of the Beanpot. Senior forward Kevin Hayes was named tournament MVP.

Coach Jerry York, leading BC to its eighth Beanpot crown, ties Snooks Kelley as BC coach with the most Beanpot wins.

BC has an overall record of 22-4-3 and is 14-0-1 since the beginning of December. With victories over BU in the opening round of the Beanpot Monday, Feb. 3, and a 6-1 win over Merrimack Feb. 7, BC jumped ahead of previous #1 Minnesota in the national rankings that came out Feb. 10.

Women: BC 3, Northeastern 0
Senior Taylor Wasylk’s first period goal proved to be the game-winner in the shutout victory at Kelley Rink, Conte Forum, Tuesday, Feb. 11. (The women’s Beanpot Tournament rotates among the home ice rinks of the participants. BC has won the last three Beanpots it has hosted.)

Goalie and co-captain Corinne Boyles stopped 25 shots in her third shutout of the season. Two power-play goals in the third period by Meagan Mangene and Melissa Bizzari completed the scoring.

Waslyk was named tournament MVP and Boyles won the Joe Bertagna Goalie Award.

BC women’s ice hockey is 21-5-3.

BC @ Golden Globes

If you didn’t watch the Golden Globes Awards show last night, you missed a couple of BC moments. Now, who woulda thought that?

First, Amy Poehler ’93, who performed the opening monologue with Tina Fey, gave a shoutout to alma mater when, referring to the Showtime series about research into sexual practices in the Fifties and Sixties, she said, “Masters of Sex . . . is the degree I got from Boston College.” She then exchanges a high five with Tina. (It is late in the monologue, appearing at about 9:20 of the clip.)

Later, Amy was named winner of best actress in a comedy series for her role in Parks and Recreation. Announcing her award and presenting it was fellow Eagle Chris O’Donnell ’92. A two-fer!

Interestingly, BC posted the Poehler-O’Donnell on Facebook, but did not mention the earlier reference. Hmmmm. :)

 

Tom McGuinness brings a bit of BC to San Diego

Two dozen BC alumni and parents gathered in La Jolla Sunday, October 27, to meet and listen to Dr. Thomas McGuinness, head of counseling services at the University.

While emphasizing that the large majority of BC students are happy and successful, Dr. McGuinness told the gathering that the number of students seeking counseling and psychiatric services from his office, which has about a dozen psychologists and psychiatrists, was significant . . . and increasing.

Tom said much attention in his field is being paid to the issue of “resiliency,” the ability of an individual to meet and manage adversity, among young adults such as those at BC. Many individual and social factors are involved, including parental practices, legal prescriptions, and technology, which makes an effort to increase personal resiliency very complicated and difficult.

His presentation was followed by questions, answers, and discussion, particularly from parents attending. Tom was in San Diego to attend the annual conference of the Association for University and College Counseling Center Directors, at the Sheraton on Harbor Island. He was joined at the event by another conference attendee, a long-time friend and colleague, Dr. Ed Hattauer ’68, head of counseling at St. John’s University, New York.

Wendy ’85 and Ken ’85 Roos, also parents of a member of the Class of 2016,  hosted the event on the rooftop deck of their home in La Jolla. The Rooses added a “hometown” touch by catering the event through Bite of Boston, a San Diego chain offering New England-style subs, lobster rolls, fried clams (with bellies), and other treats.

McGuinness_citationThe BC Alumni San Diego chapter presented Dr. McGuinness with a token of appreciation to place in his office and a sampler box of See’s dark chocolates. The chapter hopes to attract other BC administrators and faculty members to such gatherings during their visits to San Diego or participation in conferences and events here.
