Third annual chapter Mass

BCSDMass2016

Members of BC Alumni San Diego and friends attended the chapter’s third annual Mass and reception Sunday. The events were held on the campus of Cathedral Catholic High School, San Diego.

Here is a brief video of the event.

Celebrant of the Mass was Peter Gyves, S.J., ’73, ’94, ’08, associate pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the only Jesuit parish in the San Diego area. Hosting the chapter were Kevin Calkins ’00, principal of Cathedral Catholic, and his wife, Beth Calkins ’03.

Bird ball ends

Miami defeated BC today, 9-4, in the deciding game of their NCAA tournament “super regional” series. Miami goes to the College World Series and the Eagles head home.

The Hurricanes jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the 4th inning, but it was a close 5-3 margin for Miami heading into the 8th inning. Miami’s Edgar Michelangeli, who was 3-for-3 in the game, hit his second homerun of the game, this time with the bases loaded. The grand slam broke the lead out to 9-3.

Michelangeli showboated around the bases following his grand slam, drawing the ire of BC players. Indeed, there was a confrontation, with typical baseball pushing and shoving, between the teams near the Miami dugout.

While the Eagles have come back in several games late, BC added only one run, in the 8th inning, but also stranded three aboard in that inning.

The Eagles finish one of their most successful performances, at least in NCAA tournament play. Their final record is 35-22.

Local day of service

BCSD returned this year to Our Lady’s School, Our Lady of Guadalupe parish, San Diego, as part of Boston College’s Global Days of Service. On Saturday, we assisted school principal Noel Bishop in sprucing up the school grounds and improving the school’s small garden.

We joined thousands of fellow BC grads around the world in April and May who conducted service activities in their local communities. Our Lady of Guadalupe is the only Jesuit parish in San Diego County, and it serves the population of Barrio Logan, a heavily Hispanic community, in south central San Diego.

BCSD started the morning repotting Birds of Paradise and placing them outside classrooms facing out into the playground. We moved on to clear weeds, install lattices, and build a gravel walkway in the small garden area that features tomatoes. Finally, we touched up paint along the exterior of the school. Below is a photo gallery of the activities.
