Vanquishing VaTech

Led by QB Anthony Brown’s two touchdown passes and touchdown run, BC opened its 2019 season yesterday with a 35-28 win over Virginia Tech.

The Eagles rolled to 356 yards total offense in the first half against the Hokies and led 28-14 at the break. With only 76 yards offense in the second half, BC was able to hang on for the win.

Brown started the scoring only three minutes into the game, throwing a 33-yard touchdown pass to true freshman Zay Flowers. Flowers added a 58-yard reception later in the game.

The Eagles benefited from five turnovers by the Hokies. One was a fumble by VaTech QB Willis early in the second quarter when San Diego’s own Tate Haynes knocked the ball out of his hands in the Hokie backfield. BC recovered on the VaTech 17 and, two plays later, Brown threw a touchdown pass to Kobay White. Haynes, a quarterback at Cathedral Catholic, was also credited with nine tackles in the game, second only to middle linebacker Max Richardson’s 10.

Virginia Tech led in most statistical categories, including first downs (29 to BC’s 18), total offense (442 to 432), plays (89 to 75), and passing offense (344 to 275), but also led in turnovers, with five compared to BC’s one, and could not overcome that.

Running backs AJ Dillon and David Bailey produced 129 yards rushing on 35 carries and two touchdowns.

Announced attendance was 35,213 on the holiday weekend.

Next opponent is University of Richmond. The FCS Spiders won their opener over Jacksonville, 38-19.

At Petco

More than 30 San Diego Eagles, friends, and family members gathered yesterday at Petco Park for the Red Sox-Padres game. Seats were located on “The Rail,” within the iconic Western Metal Supply Company building.

There were Padres fans among the group, and they enjoyed the 3-1 win for the home team. BoSox had taken the first two games of the series.

Here’s the view.

Here’s also some video (0:54) of the pre-game performance by the Leap Frogs, the U.S. Navy Parachute Team, which dropped by from nearby Coronado.

Yet again

One team only has played in each of the last three NCAA women’s lacrosse championship games and, sadly for Boston College team members and fans, the Eagles have been defeated in each one. Today, #1 Maryland beat #2 BC, 12-10, to take the national crown.

The Eagles finished 22-2 this season, with their only losses coming in the ACC and national championships.

Maryland led at halftime, 8-4. The Eagles came within two of the Terps at 12-10 with 3:50 remaining in the game on Kenzie Kent’s fifth goal of the game, but the Maryland defense kept the lead through the end of the game.

Kent added an assist for six points for the game. Sam Apuzzo had three goals and four points, while Dempsey Arsenault and Cara Urbank each scored a goal.

The women’s lacrosse’s team performances over the last few years brings to mind the three consecutive appearances by the BC men’s hockey team in the national tournament Frozen Four, 1998-2000, and failing to win a championship. It was the next year that the Eagles broke through to win their first national title since 1949.

Maryland and BC have met in each of the last three final fours. The Terps beat BC in the 2017 national title game, 16-13, and the Eagles defeated Maryland, 15-13, in last year’s semifinals.
