‘Always an Eagle’ in Del Mar

More than 50 San Diego alumni and friends attended the “Always an Eagle” event last night in Del Mar.

In addition to making and renewing acquaintances, the group also received a briefing from Thomas Chiles, vice provost for research and academic planning at BC, on programs and initiatives in integrated sciences.

In January, the University opened 245 Beacon Street, a 150,000-square-foot facility of offices and laboratory space, classrooms, and common areas and the site of the Schiller Institute of Integrated Science and Society. The $150-million building is BC’s largest single investment in the sciences and the focal point of a $300 million University initiative in the sciences.

L-R: Sam Carney ’18, Alexa Carter ’19, and Matt Costa ’20.

The institute is named in honor of BC trustee Phil Schiller ’82 and his wife, Kim Gassett-Schiller, through a multi-year lead gift totaling $25 million.

L-R: Brian Tsu ’00, chapter leaders Lissa Tsu ’00 and Bill McDonald ’68, and Katlyn Heusner ’10.

The event was held at the home of Patricia and Marc Brutten, P’16, P’18.

Bonfire @ Bonita Cove

Not everyone stayed for the post-sundown experience.

Two dozen San Diego Eagles and their families enjoyed a traditional Southern California beach bonfire on Bonita Cove, Mission Bay, Saturday afternoon and evening.

(For what it’s worth, I thought the palm trees in the scene above were evocative of the cover of the iconic 1976 Eagles album, Hotel California, at right.)

At least two of the attendees were incoming members of the Class of 2026, due to travel east soon for their orientation session on campus August 21-23. They had the opportunity to chat with a few members of the Class of 2022.

Here’s a selection of photos of those attending.

Chapter Leader Lissa Herrick Tsu ’00 and husband Brian arrived in early afternoon to secure the bonfire pit. Red “X” marks the spot, upper left.

With the chapter tent in place later in the afternoon, the site was ready.

A few stayed for the light show — fireworks over the Bay, launched from Sea World.

Join a hike

To work off the refreshments enjoyed at our wine country excursion, we visit the Elfin Forest Reserve in Escondido on Saturday, March 19 (1 pm), and take a hike. We’ll go on the “Way Up Trail,” described as a moderate three-mile hike (1.41 miles each way).

After, we’ll go back on the refreshment route and visit Plan 9 Alehouse in Escondido. Again, more info on the Chapter Events page.

A dozen chapter members, family, and friends gathered at the Leoness Cellars winery in Temecula on February 26. Some, you may notice, were underage.

#1 in lacrosse
Kudos to the #1-ranked BC lacrosse team, which has opened its season with six straight wins. Many of their games will appear on the ACC Network. We anticipate at least a couple of gamewatches to view the defending national champions try for two in a row.
