Game on, Notre Dame!

We’ve got another contest with Notre Dame . . . and it’s local.

Chapter member Bob Nascenzi ’78 (second from left, above) is president of Cristo Rey San Diego High School, set to open with its inaugural freshman class this fall. He has issued a challenge to us and to members of the local Notre Dame alumni chapter — which group of alumni can first raise $7,500 to sponsor a student at Cristo Rey.

This is an opportunity, if you have the means, to be men and women for others in our San Diego community. The families served at Cristo Rey are getting hit the hardest financially by current conditions. Given their limited economic means, the gap between what families can be expected to contribute and the cost to educate each student amounts to $7,500 a year.

Let’s rise to the challenge and sponsor one student for the upcoming year!

Go Eagles! Beat the Irish!

For others

The Chapter conducted one of its service activities Saturday, April 6, at one of the usual sites. San Diego Eagles gathered to help out at Our Lady’s School in San Diego, the oldest Catholic elementary school in San Diego and affiliated with Our Lady of Guadalupe, the only Jesuit parish in San Diego.

L-R: Jacob Throwe ’11, Kyle Gatewood, Barry Holzman, Jennifer Gatewood Holzman ’96, Jocelyne Campese ’02, Rebecca Scease Reid ’96, Lissa Herrick Tsu ’00, Brian Tsu ’00, Maria DiSantis ’75, and Fr. John Auther, pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

A contingent of San Diego Eagles spent a couple of hours Saturday, May 5, at the San Diego Food Bank in the second local phase of this year’s “Eagles for Others” activities. The previous Saturday, phase one took place at Our Lady’s Church in Barrio Logan (earlier post).

Ten chapter members and friends joined other local volunteers at the Food Bank for a two-hour shift loading boxes of food for local seniors. According to Food Bank staff, the crew loaded 19,000 pounds of canned and packaged food into 625 boxes, providing an estimated 60,000 meals. Here’s a gallery pf photos from the day.

After the session, a half-dozen Eagles and friends relaxed at the nearby Ballast Point Brewery Miramar.

Service events happen every year. They’re work and they’re fun.
