Women sailors win national title, Lax downed in final

The women’s sailing team continued the tradition of excellence in collegiate sailing at BC by winning the 2018 Sperry Top-Sider/ICSA Women’s National Championship on May 25.

BC bested 18 other collegiate teams on the Elizabeth River in Norfolk, Va. It was the third national title for the women’s team, which won in 2008 and 2012. The Eagles’ total of 246 points tied it with College of Charleston, but BC had defeated CoC and thereby won the tie-breaker.

The Eagles have won a total of 18 national championships over the years, most recently.

No surprise, but the BC sailing team has several locals on its roster. Listed on the 2017-18 roster are: Katherine Bowman, San Diego, a graduate of Point Loma High School; Elizabeth Matheson, San Diego, Cathedral Catholic; Katherine Roughneen, Coronado, Coronado High; Elizabeth Russell, San Diego, The Bishop’s School; and Scott Sinks, San Diego, Point Loma HS.

The co-ed national championship races start May 29.

Lacrosse falls one point, and game, short

Sam Apuzzo leads team onto field.

The women’s lacrosse team made it to the national championship game for the second consecutive year and lost a close game for the second time yesterday. James Madison, seeded #3, defeated #4 seed BC, 16-15. Last year, Maryland beat the Eagles, 16-13.

On its way to the championship game, BC had defeated previously unbeaten and regular season #1 Stony Brook, 12-11, in overtime. The Eagles then met #1 tournament seed Maryland and beat the Terps 15-13 to advance to the final. There, they fell just short to JMU, which ended 22-1. The Eagles finished the season 22-2.

Junior attacker and team leading scorer Sam Apuzzo is one of five national finalists for the 2018 Tewaaraton Award, presented annually to the top male and female American collegiate lacrosse players. Considered the sport’s national player of the year award, the recipients will be announced May 31.

Hannah Hyatt, junior midfielder for the Eagles, is a San Diego resident.

A contingent of San Diego Eagles spent a couple of hours Saturday, May 5, at the San Diego Food Bank in the second local phase of this year’s “Eagles for Others” activities. The previous Saturday, phase one took place at Our Lady’s Church in Barrio Logan (earlier post).

Ten chapter members and friends joined other local volunteers at the Food Bank for a two-hour shift loading boxes of food for local seniors. According to Food Bank staff, the crew loaded 19,000 pounds of canned and packaged food into 625 boxes, providing an estimated 60,000 meals. Here’s a gallery pf photos from the day.

After the session, a half-dozen Eagles and friends relaxed at the nearby Ballast Point Brewery Miramar.

Service events happen every year. They’re work and they’re fun.

Service 2018 Part 1

San Diego Eagles returned last Saturday to Our Lady’s School in Barrio Logan for the first of two service activities in conjunction with BC’s Global Days of Service. (This Saturday, we’ll return to the San Diego Food Bank.)

The chapter has been doing projects at Our Lady’s School for several years. The school is sponsored by the parish, Our Lady of Guadalupe, the only Jesuit parish in San Diego County. Also participating this year in the service projects was a contingent of alumni from Santa Clara University.

2016 project completed

Ironically, the BC group’s work this year was, in a sense, to undo a project we had built two years earlier. In May 2016, we cleared weeds, installed lattices, and built a gravel walkway in a small garden area. Regrettably, that garden area, which is separated from the school, had been unused because of security issues and was now overgrown.

This time, we cleared the area to permit future use when the security situation has improved.
